Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC)

“When Words Fail, music speaks.”-Hans Christian Andersen

Personal Philosophy: My personal philosophy as a clinical therapist is rooted on the iso principle. I try to approach every new client with a blank slate and allow the therapeutic relationship develop through the clients unique background, life experiences, and needs.  The music therapeutic interventions; serving as the medium between client and therapist; should be client-specific and reflect their needs and relationship with music. I also believe in the importance that self-care plays in all of our lives and that an empty car cannot give clients motion without any gas in the tank.  With past training in the Sanctuary Model of Trauma-Informed Care; I emphasize and facilitate a therapeutic environment that serves to promote, foster, and educate clients on the importance of the four pillars/models including (S.E.L.F), and the 7 commitments including ‘Growth and Change’.  Safety is key and I contract with the client for the most therapeutically safe environment.

Path: My path towards becoming a music therapist began at an early age.  I took my first guitar lesson at 10 years old and revisited the instrument in 6th grade after developing a love for oldies and classic rock music.  My true love for music developed through learning the Trumpet and playing in school ensembles.  I knew from the time I was in 7th grade that I wanted to have a career in music.  Music served as an outlet for me to deal with my emotions and life stressors and served as my “therapist” growing up.  After graduating from H.S., I pursued a degree in music; completing a Bachelor of Music degree in 2009.  During my undergraduate studies, I took some psychology courses as electives and developed a love for the topic and profession.  Torn between continuing my music education training and studying psychology, I began to conduct a search into the field of Music Therapy and made the decision upon completing my music performance degree, to enroll in a Masters Equivalency program at Immaculata University.  Completing my clinical internship requirements through the Delaware Autism program, I sat and completed the requirements to obtain a Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) credential in 2011, and graduated with a Masters of Arts degree in 2012.

Experience: I began my career as a Board Certified Music Therapist working with developmentally disabled children and adolescents in both schools and after-school programming through the Christina School District and the Heart of Variety Children’s Charity.  After completing my Masters of Arts degree, I took a different professional route; working at a Children’s Home and Shelter program that utilized the ‘Sanctuary Model’ of Trauma-Informed Care.  While at the facility, I learned how to incorporate Trauma Informed Care practices in 1:1 and group music therapeutic sessions through experiences such as Song lyrical analysis, Drumming and Improvisation, Songwriting, and Listening to Music.  In 2014, I returned to Delaware and began operating a private practice; acquiring diverse provider agencies including Autism Delaware, Children and Families First, and The Moorings at Lewes (Dementia Care) program.  While contracting with Children and Families First, I conducted 1:1 sessions with adolescent clients through the Seaford House program.  Since 2016, I have been working as a Music Therapist at Dover Behavioral Health Services, working with diverse client populations and programs, conducting group sessions.  While at Dover Behavioral Health Services, I worked with Adolescent and Adult groups both inpatient and outpatient as well as detox patients.  I am excited to be on board with the MEC team where my background and unique training and talents can add to diverse clients in which we serve on-site.
